Henry Allport: Gunmaker.

Henry Allport

Gunmaker

67 Old George Street

Cork

Trade Label for Henry Allport Circa 1865. Photograph Courtesy Bonhams.

The dates listed for this maker as found via the Cork Trade Directories are:

Henry Allport.   1820-1850   77 Georges Street

Henry Allport.     -1867                 67 Old George
Street.

N.B: Research is ongoing but it our belief that with the expansion of the city. George Street was extended. Thereby a distinction being drawn between the old and the new part of this street. In addition, this would explain the door number alteration from 77 to 67. A common occurrence in the Victorian period.   At this stage unproven!

They became "and Sons" in circa 1867 when trading at 42 Patrick Street.

The final entry in the Trade Directories for Henry Allport & Son is 1883.

A future blog will include an article from a very   distinguished American writer detailing a Beringer rifle attributed to Henry Allport.

  1. I have a military (Artillery officers?) from Allport, George St. Cork.
Is this from the same family as the gun smiths?

    1. No doubt. Four Allport brothers immigrated to Ireland from Birmingham, UK in the early 1830's. Henry Allport (the one in your inquiry) set up shop on Cork with at least one brother, Joseph (my gg-grandfather) who moved to Liverpool about 1843. Their father and grandfather (both named Thomas) were Birmingham gunmakers. I have none of their firearms. Still looking. Joe Allport
