John Neill. Gunmaker. Belfast.

Belfast Firearms Robbery

"The robbery of arms in Belfast has produced great uneasiness in that town, and many rumours are in circulation in connection with it. One of these (our correspondent mentions) is, that some description of local Fenian movement had been planned for the 1st of May, but did not take place, according to the Northern Whig, from the non-receipt of expected “orders from America,” The belief exists, probably only in the minds of alarmists, that considerable quantities of arms are secreted about the town and neighbourhood. The shop of Neill, the Belfast gunmaker, from which the seventeen pistols and guns were taken, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and the robbery committed in a most clever manner, no trace of violence being visible. The five persons first arrested have been discharged, but are understood to be under surveillance. The detective force are busy, and there is a good hope of results".

Sligo Duel.1788

                                              Early 19th century Cruikshank cartoon.

Sligo 12 June, 1788.
Early on Tuesday morning last a duel was fought on Sir Tique O'Regan's fort between two gentlemen of this town, when after discharging a case of pistols each without effect, the seconds very prudently interposed and happily made up the quarrel.

                                    Repairs to a Gun.

                       Why Belfast Firm’s Claim Failed.

At Omagh Quarter Sessions yesterday, Joseph Braddell & Son, Gunmakers Arthur Square, Belfast, sued Charles Roulston, Auctioneer, Omagh, to recover £4-10s claimed for repairs to a gun.
William J. Clarke gave evidence that plaintiff received a gun for repairs from the defendant. The repairs to the ejector were the practical item with the account. The charge for the work was reasonable.
In cross – examination he agreed the defendant did not ask to have the ejector repaired but the gun would not have been serviceable if the repairs had not been carried out.
Defendant lodged £2 in the Court in settlement of the claim. He stated that the only repair necessary was a new striker spring, and the first intimation he had that the ejector had been repaired was when he received the account from the plaintiffs.
Judge Linehan said the defendant’s order for repairs only referred to the striker spring and plaintiffs were not entitled to travel outside that authority without calling defendant’s attention to the fact. The amount lodged in Court was sufficient and the case would be dismissed.
