H.Trulock & Harriss. London.

Henry Trulock Harriss
Gun & Rifle Manufacturer.
London. S.W..

Born in 1891, Henry Trulock Harriss would have had connections with the Irish side of the Trulock & Harriss business and founded this company in London circa 1911.  No doubt Henry thought his fortune may have been made in London but this company went in to liquidation in 1915 as did the Irish firm of Trulock Harriss and Richardson Ltd..
The research with respect to Henry Trulock Harriss and the Irish side of the business is ongoing.

1843 Registration Act. Rifles.

The Irish Registration Act of 1843

  Schedule B.,6&7 Vic.,Cap.74,Sec 3.

Licence to Keep Arms.

 Survey
1843-1846
Rifles

The following entries have been collected over a number years by myself, fellow collectors and dealers. In total over 1100 registrations from the 40 areas have been collated which is a very small sample of the 300.000 weapons the authorities had calculated were in circulation in private hands
at this time.

The list below gives all those rifles found registered  between 1843-1846.

Listed are the county prefix, licence number, description of weapon/s and where possible the maker/retailer.

CL 1871     Baker Rifle
EC 2057     28 Bore Miquelet Rifle
DC 1343     Percussion Rifle
G 2793     Flintlock. Overall 55" Brass Mounts.
KE 951     Percussion Rifle 18 Bore. Bailey Pattern. Castle St, Tralee.
TY 516       Kentucky Rifle. Maple Stock. Patchbox. Converted from     Flintlock.

As can be determined by the low count of rifles found within this survey they were indeed a rare commodity in Ireland during the mid 19th century.

We are always interested in receiving information related to rifles registered under this Act.

The Irish Constabulary Percussion "Undercover" Pistol.

The Irish Constabulary Percussion

" Undercover"

Police Pistol.1848.

George Lovell's "Undercover" Percussion Pocket Pistol.  9.5" Overall with a 4.5" 17 bore           smooth bore round barrel with captive ramrod.

A total of  five hundred of this type of arm were produced for the Board of Ordnance in 1848. This is the last of the smooth bore pistols designed by George Lovell. Refer:British Military Firearms 1650-1850 by Howard L. Blackmore. pages 213&223.. They were ordered in 1847 and manufactured by Hollis Brothers in Birmingham. Interestingly they were issued with leather cases (holsters?). We would be pleased to know if anyone has one of these pistols in the original case/holster.

                                                                   Marked Tower 1848

Crowned "VR", London Proof marks, B/O mark and Constabulary number "C-200".

B/O mark with broad arrow to stock and inspectors number 15.

Blackmore describes these are as used "when serving in plain clothes on special duty". He also notes that they are "registered" which they were i.e., C-1 to C-500 presumably? This registering was not part of the 1843 Registration Act as this legislation was repealed in 1846.
