The guntrade became a very important business for the economy of Dublin in the 18th and 19th centuries and many support business's blossomed. As we have previously seen wood merchants such as Alder's were offering gun stocks (blog 16/1/2016)  Engravers were finishing guns and pistols off with style and also producing copperplates to reproduce trade cards/labels as per Mr S.Close in (blog 11/2/2016). In addition, barrel makers, lock filers etc., were all turning specialist component parts of the business into industries of their own.

John Flynn was yet another who specialised in making gun boxes and cases for all manner of
weaponry. These boxes/cases are works of art in their own right and even in today's collecting
market pistol and guns cases are highly sought especially when in complete condition,
containing an original trade card/label.

Examples:

                                          Mahogany Duelling/Target Pistol Case c. 1800
Brass Corners,Straps,Hinges,Closures, Handle, Escutcheon and lock with Ivory                                                                                  key escutcheon.

James Calderwood, 22 Duke Street, Dublin c.1850
