NB: The spelling of Vickars/Vickers differed in the Dublin trades directories. The Thoms directory of 1822 (above) states "Vickars". However, the Pigot's & Co directory of 1824 uses "Vickers". The engraver on the above pistol has chosen "Vickers". The spelling of many gunmakers names vary. Quite a common occurrence. One of the above is right!!

A big thank you to all those who have made the blog such a great success, especially those who contributed data, photography and made this forum an organic site throughout 2017.

During 2018 we will be adding yet more to this blog. The information already listed is free and has been built from not only my own research but from many other collectors and able researchers. Where possible these have been accredited, others wishing to remain anonymous.

Although this research centres predominantly on the gunmaker's Ireland we are always pleased to look at material relating to any aspect of the early guntrade.

Thanks again and enjoy a peaceful Festive Season.

                                     Common Pleas

John Martyn v George and Thomas Turner

This was an action for an assault and false imprisonment. The plaintiff is a hatter, and the
defendants are gun-makers. In October last (October 1819), the parties took a shop in Ballinasloe,of which the plaintiff occupied one side , and the defendants the other, during a fair of that town.
On the evening of the 10th they were drinking together, and a scuffle ensued, after which one of the defendants, having missed some money accused the plaintiff of robbing him, and had him arrested.
This was at nine o'clock, and he remained in custody until one in the morning; the defendant expressed sorrow for what had occured, retracted the charge, and said he would not have wished
what had occurred for £100.
Verdict for the plaintiff, £15 damages.
Counsel for the plaintiff, Messrs Goold,Driscoll and Green- For the defendants, Messrs O'Connell and O'Loghlen.
