Patrick Mullen Bequest of £15.000 1896.

Patrick Mullen (Mullin)

Gunsmith

Dublin, London & New York City

This bequest of 75.000 dollars, in 1896, made by Patrick Mullen/Mullin, is the eqivalent of 2.25 million dollars today. A gift made for the protection of the Irish language by one of the most gifted and succesful gunsmiths who traded in Dublin, London and finally New York City. However, Mullen's nephew contested the Will and the result of this claim is unclear. Whatever the outcome of this litigation the mere fact that this pledge was made speaks volumes for the affection Patrick Mullen maintained for his mother country, his love of the Gaelic language and moreover his success in business in America.

Please refer to our older post with respect to a John Mullen gunsmith dated 4/3/2016.

NB: 1896... £15.000 inflation calculation £450.000 2019.

Mr Rigby. Trying Fire Arms 1839

William & John Rigby

Gun Makers

Dublin

Freemans Journal 12th August 1839
Image courtesy of the British Newspaper Archive.

We are not informed as to whether this was Mr. William Rigby or his brother, John? who had decided to take this rifle into a public place, in the centre of Dublin, to try it!  They were obviously not just trying the gun for ignition but range! At this time they enjoyed the ownership of a sixty feet shooting gallery beneath the premises at 24 Suffolk Street and this must have been condidered too short a range to try this East India bound rifle.

Please refer to our older post with respect to the Rigby family of gunmakers.
