Issued c.1840

These carbines produced by William & John Rigby under contract and originally issued to the R.I.C. They also saw use by the Port Water Guard (PWG, Dublin) and Prison Service.

Calibre .450. Sighted front and rear. 8 grooved rifling. Back-action lock.brass mounts. Buttplate stamped with Irish Registration number M-N 6847 (Monaghan). Hinged Patch-box. Steel ramrod.

NB: Although the DMP were considered to be an unarmed street force the Prison Service were allocated carbines.

We would be pleased to know of other variants of this type of carbine and further additional social history regarding their issue.

Our thanks to the owner for additional photography and permission to publish.
