This advertisement identifying the many gunmakers at this time working as apprentices/jobbing/working gunmakers. Many going on to establish their own companies. John Rigby, William Kavanagh and Thomas Trulock being especially notable here.

If we refer to the 1779 Dublin Trades Directory below it is evident that all the above listed 90 "working gunmakers" would have been in the employ of one of these master gunsmiths listed below. The only exception being "Rainsford" to whom it has been added "Manaf" (sic) implying Manufacturer (Manu).

                                   Brass sideplate from this early eighteen century pistol.

The sight of this sideplate clearly engraved to "J. Turton, Limerick" is the first concrete evidence to link Turton to Ireland. Turton's time in Limerick must have been for a very short period as his work although of good quality is very scarce.
Please refer to Great British Gunmakers by W. Keith Neal & D.H.L.Back. pgs.362-365 for sight of other pistols by this maker and although named was not attributed to Ireland.
