  1. I've been a few times on a muzzle loading only, black powder pheasant shoot several years ago. The beaters stopped for reloading. Powder added, then a double wad, greased with goose fat and a single wad added. Crimped tightly with a modern steel ramrod, not a wooden one.Remove the ramrod before firing as the kick will dislodge the original ramrod and blow the end off! The dog in the painting looks more setter than spaniel. Setters were the perfect dog for such muzzle loading shooting, particularly the Irish red and white setter, derived from the ancient breed imported from the Spanish Netherlands to Ireland by the Dutch Westenra family in the 17th century.
