A Truel near Waterford. Two against One!! 1797.

                 A Truel near Waterford

An affair of honour of a very extraordinary nature took place a short time since in the neighbourhood of Waterford, in Ireland; a young physician of that place having been grosly(sic) insulted, as he conceived, by two officers, he demanded satisfaction, and in order to make short work of it, determined to fight both of them at once; this challenge was accepted, and all three of them met on the next morning, the physician in a line between his adversaries , with a pistol in each hand pointed to both of them; all the combatants fell on the first fire, The physician was wounded in the breast, one of his opponents was shot through the knee, and the other in the right side; but they are all recovered.

Duelling: An error of judgement. 1779.

                                              Duelling

                                    Ireland.

        A Duel between Councellor R........ and .........

November 1779

A remarkable trial lately happened in the Court of King's Bench, in Ireland.

A Counseller R..... had fought a duel with a gentleman, and killed him.

He traversed the indictment, and imagined the Jury, as usual, would bring in their verdict of "Manslaughter." But the Barrister found himself mistaken. They deemed the intentious of two men going out, premeditatedly, to fight, to be " Malice aforethought;" and to the astonishment of the Court, brought the prisoner in "Guilty"- Death.

The Judges desired them to recommend him to the Bench, as an object of mercy. They did it with reluctance. This may probably put a stop to the practice of duelling in Ireland.

                                    October 1769.

A duel was fought in Ireland between Henry Flood and James Agar., in which the latter was shot dead.

An old quarrel had long subsisted between them, which they at length agreed to decide in this manner, and which proved fatal to the aggressor.
