Extremely Rare and Early Air Cane by Rigby, Dublin.

                                 Rigby (Fecit)

                             Dublin

                           Air Cane

                                  c.1820

An extremely rare and interesting air cane manufactured by Rigby.  John Rigby having died in 1818 and his son having taken control of the business throughout the early 1820's. All steel reservoir and barrel with imitation cane finish. High quality walnut skeleton shoulder stock and brass tipped loading rod.

At this period William Holland, Gunmaker, Dublin stated that he was the only maker of this type of weapon and went on to produce air canes within Belfast c.1825

We would be interested to know if any other gun collectors own or have ever seen a Rigby air cane?

Our sincere thanks to the owner for photography and permission to publish.

A Directory of the Early Irish Gunmakers.

                    by David J.W. Stroud

This new title written over the past 35 years has over 950 entries covering Irish gunmakers, ammunition suppliers and the gun trade in general within the 32 counties of Ireland.

In addition, this new work contains some 400 B/W illustrations and 32 colour plates.

Ireland with such a rich and turbulent history has been a study so sorely neglected and this work highlights the many talented artisans that made up the early Irish gun trade and plots the growth and the lasting legacy of an industry which fell under many political and religious constraints, yet prevailed and moreover, set new standards in many aspects of gun and pistol design and manufacture.
