Each of the forty areas were issued a proclamation and the law was implemented as of January 1844.

Robert Huddleston also had a brother, John, who traded as a gunmaker in Ballynahinch.
It is not certain if their father James was also in the trade but current research indicates that he was a farmer in County Down. The likelyhood is that both Robert & John were engaged within the Belfast guntrade where they would have learned their trades.

Founded in 1838 by James Morris this company would have been an integral part of the commercial life within the County of Carlow. Interesting to those of us in the guntrade as they were ammuntion suppliers and vendors of sporting requisites. Although we have no evidence to substantiate this statement they could well have been in the gunsmithing business.. a business that many ironmongers adopted.

THE GUN TRADE
This trade, judging from the sales by auction during the past week in this town, is flourishing. The moment the sale of an article of agricultural produce is effected, the first object to secure is a gun, consequently, in every avenue leading to town we meet men returning home with firearms.-

Anti-Dueling (sic) Association.

Queen Victoria was continually worried by the fact that her military elite and other antagonists were constantly "calling out" eachother for the pleasure of proving their honour which at times ended in severe injury or death.
The Anti-Duelling Association also had a branch in Dublin.

The Registration Act of 1843.
Although the law was passed in August 1843 it was not on the Statute Book until the November of 1843 and implemented as of January 1844. The majority of arms were registered within the years 1844 & 1845.
The Act being repealed in the November of 1846 and had fallen into little use after 1845.
