Stephen Grant. Gunmaker, Dublin.
Stephen Grant
Gunmaker
Dublin
This esteemed and gifted gunmaker started his career with William Kavanagh in Dublin and would go on to open his own company in c. 1855. He is noted in the 1856 Dublin trades directory as operating from No 2 Portobello Harbour. (below)
Stephen Grant soon moved to England where he was engaged briefly by Charles Lancaster c.1857 and thereafter by Thomas Boss. Following the death of Thomas Boss, Grant would manage this business for a further 10 years and became romantically linked with Thomas Boss's widow.
His association with the Boss enterprise ended and Grant finally opened his own establishment in London in 1867 at 67a St James Street. G.T.Teasdale Buckell in Experts on Guns & Shooting makes mention to Stephen Grant no less than twelve occasions throughout this title which originally appeared in 1900, (Reprinted 1986).. two years after the death of Grant on 21st January 1898. Included in this title is a photograph of Stephen Grant.
Stephen Grant built a strong and loyal following during the live pigeon shooting phase in shooting history and his main rivals at this time being Purdey & Boss.
